Description

International bestselling author Mark Lawrence continues the bold new world of dark fantasy he created in the Broken Empire trilogy with the first book of the Red Queen's War...

For all her reign the Red Queen has fought the long war, contested in secret, against the powers that stand behind nations, for higher stakes than land or gold. Her greatest weapon is The Silent Sister—unseen by most and unspoken of by all.

The Red Queen’s grandson, Prince Jalan Kendeth—drinker, gambler, seducer of women—is one who can see The Silent Sister. Content with his role as a minor royal, Jal pretends that the hideous crone is not there. But war with the undead is coming, and the Red Queen has called on her family to defend the realm. Jal thinks that nothing that will affect him. He's wrong...

After escaping a death trap set by the Silent Sister, Jal finds his fate magically intertwined with a fierce Norse warrior. As the two undertake a journey to undo the spell, encountering grave dangers, willing women, and an upstart prince named Jorg Ancrath along the way, Jalan gradually catches a glimmer of the truth: he and the Norseman are but pieces in a game—and the Red Queen controls the board.

I didn’t think it was possible to enjoy a character more than Jorg. But mark lawrence has outdone himself once against with prince of thorns. In my opinion the most masterful prose writer in fantasy, bar none. Every chapter ending left you shaking your head trying to understand how he could come up with visuals that hit you every single time. Thank you, Mr. Lawrence for giving us such an amazing pair of main characters, cannot wait to get started on the next one!

Another tale woven perfectly of the harsh world and harsh people that Mark Lawrence has created. Violence and Virtue are precursors for this vivid fantasy and the intersecting timelines of Prince of Thorns and Prince of Fools was fantastic.

A fun, well crafted, fantasy with a balance of drama, darkness, and humor. The main characters are fully developed and the author skillfully draws the reader into their world.
  • Not a fan of cowardice, so it took some effort to get into this book... Glad I did!

The author is fantastic and came through as I had hoped. Good start but I struggle with people that lack courage to try. It's around us so much that "escape" for me, comes in the form of books. The right balance surfaced to create a great story. I look forward to the next book... I may even read the Prince of Thorns series again while I wait (for the third time) ;)
